DEPENDING on how you were raised and the influences that came into your life from an early age, talking about money can often be seen as taboo. While we are happy to watch people talk about it on social media or spend tens of thousands of dollars without worry on reality television, it can often be a topic of contention in relationships, workplaces and families. This can be due to internalised money stories, lack of understanding and how people view money – it’s different for everyone.
This blog focuses on how we can start to have better conversations around money, regardless of the experiences that lead us to view finances in different ways, led by the team from Serenity Financial Planning.
Start from a place of calm
Money can be touchy, right? So it’s never a good idea to approach a conversation about money when you’re feeling dysregulated, heightened, stressed or exhausted. If you can, set the scene to a place of calm, where you are able to both actively listen and voice your thoughts with the person you wish to speak to. Please know that when it comes to finances, you may not always like the answers you hear, but it’s important to discuss both sides.
Speak with people you trust about money
The more often you talk about money and get educated on the topic, the conversations become easier (typically). Speak with people you trust about finances, and be mindful of the advice you get back. Sometimes building your knowledge and hearing how other people manage money can also be really helpful in growing your financial mindset. Use our Conversation Cards as prompts, or if you’re not ready to start talking yet, use them to help you journal.
If in doubt, speak with a qualified financial planner
